for everyone

Do I write these under the influence of any form of substance..If so I should have been born in the 1950's with a bottle of whiskey in my top draw.

Today I should be writing about Daughters Prom , but to be honest, as great as the day was and as beautiful as she looked, my brain is far from recapping it right now.  I do promise to update you all tomorrow.

Now onto this week's Editorial.

More than 4.500 drivers in Ontario have had their licences suspended and new legislation in the Highway Traffic Act that targets speeders driving 50 km/h in excess of the posted limit.

Last year in Ontario the government passed a law that if you're caught speeding, in the excess of 50km over the limit you car is impounded for up to a week, plus the charges are Race Speeding and the cost of the impound. Depending on the fine your car can even be crushed. The number of drivers charged is enough to make public transit look like a transportation safe house but it doesn't seem to deter many from this kind of unsafe driving. It amazes me driving by a school zone. it seems most of these speeders are mothers getting home to watch....Reggis and Kelly.

Not only do drivers insist on travelling 50 kilometers or more thant the posted sped limits, but many of those drivers are caught by police on one of our major highways...the 401-400-407-403, which means they are doing more then 150 km/h.

I travel three of these major highways each weekend to our trailer and if you have ever driven at that speed or been a passenger in a vehicle travelling at that speed it's safe to say you don't have common sense.  You'll notice the term "accident" is rarely used here in Ontario anymore in media reports.  That's because the majority are "collisions" and someone, quit often speeders are the ones to blame.  Although, the number of impaired drivers who still stagger to their vehicles and get behind the wheel is equally, if not more, atrocious.

Accidents happen without warning.  Collisions can be avoided, for the most part.

The number of people who died on Ontario roads last year was 451.  I personally saw with my children with me, 9 of these last summer. Now the OPP ( Ontario Provincial Police) has a new airplane to watch from above for speeders. The government has spent millions on new lines on the road for the cop plane to guesstimate if your speeding...Lets hope it works because it's getting scary now to drive our highways.

I'm not sure if this airplane will work or not, I sure do hope it does because the 400 series have become a death trap, you seriously do take your life into your hands, or the trust of strangers when you travel here now. So the next time you get into your vehicle, don't search the sky to make sure you're not going to be caught but the police.  Use your head, keeps your eyes on the road and leave you heavy foot for the riding lawn mower.

 Arrive Alive

People here drive way over the speed limit all the time, I know the street past my house is 25 mph and there are cars that go past doing at least 45 or more, where are the cops. Roll through a stop sign at midnight and they will be right there believe me. lol The airplane does work, and I am talking from experience, they do that in my state. I was returning from Montana once clipping along, not really fast but I was over the speed limit by a few miles per hr. About a mile up the road there is cops in the middle of the highway motioning for you to pull over, there were several cars parked on the shoulder. Mr. Macho came over to me and told me I was caught on radar by the plane going "x" amount over the limit, well, he gave me a nice little ticket. Haven't had one since, learned my lesson. Drunk driving? It just came out in the paper that ND has the most drunk drivers anywhere, I beleive it, they seem to think they are above the law of drinking and driving in this state. Here they gripe about people over a certain age driving and should have their licensce taken away at a certain age, hell most of the accidents are the people that are in the late teens and early 20s age group, they seem to be the ones that think they know all the road rules and anyone that does go the speed limit is considered and old geezer, really ticks me off. People just have to learn to lift their foot from that gas pedal a little and be on the lookout for how the other person is driving to, you have to be at full attention when driving, not text messaging and all that stuff, to many things going on in the car other then driving.

You would think that with the price of fuel being as high as it is and promising to go higher people would slow down to conserve it but high fuel prices, like stiffening punishments, do not deter speeders. The only thing I know that slows people down is potholes.

We have helicopters to detect speeders and they don't bother with having coppers up the road to pull you over. You just get the fine in the mail a few days later. Our highways and freeways are riddled with fixed speed cameras.

Being someone who drives "too slow" I can relate to this.Im not comfortable with the 65mph on some roads..and people pass me like I was standing still. lol
I say..leave the house earlier if you want to get there on time...not do 80 mph to get there on time.
Sheesh

I don't get how they can drive soo fast...its too easy to lose control.
I was in a t-bone accident last year and now I even go slow through a green light.
Maybe drivers should have to be stoned to drive eh?..that'll slow em' down lol,

While I will 'fess up, I am one of those fast drivers. Always have been and have lost my license to the state because of it (when I was 16 in Colorado). Point is, What I don't do in a car: I don't talk (or text) on the cell phone...I don't discipline my kids while driving (good God, pull over)...eat...look at my passenger when I talk...take pictures...or anything else that distracts me from paying attention.

If you want to drive, dammit DRIVE, if you want to chat - Go to a coffee house. And please if you see me coming up behind you, kindly get in the other lane, I'm in a hurry.

Speeding is a big problem all over the place. Speeding while using a cell phone is a double whammy. I often see Semi truck drivers, in triple trailers driving while one hand is to their ear. It doesn't take much for the car in front of them to suddenly stop, and the semi crashes into the car that had to stop suddenly.

Then we have the opposite, those who go UNDER the speed limit. They are just as dangerous. It causes the car behind them to pass, and often there is an uncoming car, especially in a two lane hwy, and disater happens.

People who follow to closely. That's another concern of mine. If you are going the speed limit, the car behind you doesn't want to, and they are on your rear big time. Which if the person in front is a nervous driver to begin with, can lose control and all hell breaks loose.

I'm sure if all of the adults were given a drivers test..I'm sure millions would fail. I have seen confusion at 4-way stops. Who goes first? I have seen confusion at a stop light, in opposite directions, If one is going straight, and the other is making a left turn, who should yeild? The one turning or the one going straight? I have seen many close call accidents because of this confusion. I believe when one renews their drivers license, everyone should take the written test, before getting their picture taken. It doesn't have to be as hard as the ones teens take, but just basic driving etiquettes.

Those who reach close to 70 years in age, should be required to take a drivers test yearly, with a qualified person in the car judging it. Many of the elderly get confused, like forgetting where the gas and brake are...

Good editorial Sen's.

Shirley~Drinking and driving charges here seem to be people over the age of 30..
I agree that today more and more people are multy tasking while driving..many time I even see people reading a book while speeding down the highways.

I've heard that cops will be staked out under bridges to get the speeders that the plane radios about.

Im not a fast driver any more either Six, but I do keep up with the traffic...more often tho I do see people speeding on the soft shoulder on the highways...knowing soon the traffic will stop when these fools crash up ahead with a car sitting in the lane.

Do you think a stoned driver is the same as a drunk driver?

Tisk Tisk about loosing your licence...and like I commented to Shirly, I do think that if you're behind the wheel...drive only!

Here they take the test at age 80..and I think teens should be tested in the winter and summer!

Last year while my truck ...at the time..was in the shop getting some work down , they gave me a car...stick shift...love driving a shift...anyway...I was on a hill at the light when this person came right behind me...now with a stick there is some roll back when your on a hill...the light turned green, this person came closer and of course...I rolled back into him...no damage was done, but he he called me a nasty name like it was my fault...was his fault for kiss my back end.

People have no time today and being on the road with people like that scares the shit outta me some days.

Thanks all for your comments :)

Do you think that seeing someone decapitated would make a difference. Had a friend that saw this happen with someone speeding weaving in and out of cars. Guy pasted him and as he went up the road drove by the guy doing this rear-ended a simi and his head was gone. Never had a speeding ticket in my life.

Cindy~they have adds here on TV with the after effects of a crash, and it doesn't seem to do anything.
Racing on major highways here is the new sport for the 20 somethings's with these souped up cars... when you see one coming behind you, you just know hes on a speeding mission..then the 911 calls start.

Sorry your friend had to see this...It was more upsetting last summer when my kids saw something like this.
